Fate
Throughout this book, fate has been a main theme to Santiago's journey. The people he meets all believe in a word "Maktub" which is defined as "it is written". This means that the people believed that the future is written for them by god and that everything happens for the good of mankind. Due to this belief, a lot of the characters that Santiago meets during his journey believes that they are not fated to fulfill their personal journey, leading them to live a normal life such as the Crystal merchant.
Omen
Omen is mentioned a great deal throughout the book. A symbol of omen in the story is the two stones, Urim and Thummim, that the englishman and Santiago recieved from the king that they met. Santiago focused on recognizing the omen and learned to rely on them to lead him to his personal legend. An example of when an omen guided Santiago is when Santiago noticed the two hawks fighting in the skies which led to his vision of an approaching army. His vision allowed Santiago to warn the Chieftain which protects him and allows him to continue on with his personal legend. The reading of the two hawks was an omen to Santiago.
Fear
Santiago experienced fear throughout his journey. He first feared the gypsy who interpreted his dream. Then he feared of losing all his belongings during his journey. He also feared of death during the battle in the oasis. He learns from the people he meets along his journey on how to deal with his fears. He overcomes his fears by thinking of fear as a materialistic thing and that he should believe that if he pursues his dream, nothing fearful will be able to stop him.
