Urim and Thummim
Urim and Thummim were believed to be used during the biblical ages. These valuable pieces of rocks were carried around by the high priests in their breastplate. People believe that the Urim was light which holds the message and Thummim was the decoder of these messages.
There was also belief that these rocks were a substitute material for a different gemstone that was placed on the breastplate. In a lot of historical events, these rocks were used to predict the outcome of certain situations such as warfare and the future. Due to its power to read the future, people only used it during important events such as warfare and the future of their state.
In the alchemist, Urim and Thummim were portrayed to be able to read and tell omens. Santiago held these stones in either pockets and only brought them out when the situation gets problematic. Paulo Coelho replicated the use of these stones very well with what history tells us. When reading the two stones, Urim would represent "No", while Thummim represented "Yes".
