“…whoever you are, or whatever it is that you do, when you really want something, it's because that desire originated in the soul of the universe. It's your mission on earth."
This being said by Melchizedek to Santiago when they first spoke. While speaking, Melchizedek mentions that Santiago should not give up on his dreams and desires. Relating to his dream, Melchizedek says there is something in the universe that is pulling Santiago to visit the pyramids. This causes Santiago to begin his journey and find his Personal Legend.
“Every search begins with beginner’s luck. And every search ends with the victor’s being severely tested.”
These were the last words Santiago heard from the alchemist. During the scene, Santiago questions why he had to go through all he has experienced. The alchemist then says so he may find his Personal Legend. Santiago was said to be lucky when he started his journey because he had just been robbed. He goes through harder struggles down the road but then gets help. This was the victor being severely tested. For his own good, Santiago was able to master the lessons he has already learned.
“We are afraid of losing what we have, whether it’s our life or our possessions or our property. But this fear evaporates when we understand that our life stories and the history of the world were written by the same hand.”
In other words, us humans are so attached to our worldly belongings that we do not want to lost them. However, when we find out our true meaning of life and figure out God has written our life stories, we are not afraid. In the story, Santiago goes through many struggles when trying to achieve his Personal Legend. Sometimes he feels like giving up because he does not want to lose what he already has. But, Santiago soon realizes he earns greater rewards when he ignores his fear and puts his possessions behind him.
